Off Planet
Created in collaboration with Blake Thompson, this is a project inspired by Cartoon Network's "Steven Universe". The comic can be read on Tapas.
Creating all new gems inspired by Rebecca Sugar's designs and style had been one of my obsession for a while, and this project allowed to make my passion relay shine!
Homeworld Gems
Here we have our main characters lineup.
The story follows the little Spinel, the new toy of a famous Spessartine Garnet, as she learns how to maneuver in a world way too big for her, out to take advantage of her innocence.
Between snobby Pearls and burly Quartzes, Spinel is friendly and playful, offering us a glimpse into an oddly colorful ruthless system of hierarchy and power.
Enhydro Agate
A leader and a warrior like all other Quartzes, Agate happens to wish for freedom in the repressive regime of Homeworld. Softer than other soldiers, she commands authority through mutual respect among her troops. Unfortunately her comradery means little to Spessartine. Forced to leave for Earth, the only safe haven in the Galalaxy, she ends up corrupted, deformed as a punishment, now nothing more than a beast.

Canelians
Enhydro Agate's soldiers, they appear in the comic as a contrast to J-1 Jasper. Friendly, a bit silly, they show the little Spinel that not all Quartzes are as aggressive as her bully.
HJ3 - The smaller of the group, rough and grumpy.
HU9 - Intentionally named "hug", the friendly giant.
HV8 - Defective due to her missing arm, smartest.
Unused Gem
Once a bigger project, I went out of my way to plan out characters that corrupted Hydro and the Spinel would have encountered on Earth.
My first idea was how most likely most human mythological monsters in this alternative universe would be in reality corrupted gems, made monstrous for defecting the Gem Empire.
Chlorophane here would have been a Chinese dragon, a creature of worship for local humans, unwanted and discarded by her owner and left to rot on Earth.
Earth Clothes
Designed disguise for Chlorophane Fluorite inspired by Mongolian hunter grabs and north Chinese commoner clothing. The need for such a bizarre creature to hide for survival before modernity and the fall of the tyranny meant for her a lot of custom fit clothes to hide her more grotesque features.
